One of our co-workers was in that plane. Not a direct one (3500 people work here), but suddenly it comes awfully close. This whole day my (other) direct co-worker is busy with the communication of this loss (to other co-workers, parents from the daycare she worked, etcetera).
Also a few people I know online who either lost a friend, family members or co-worker. Even though we have 16 million people in the Netherlands, it's surprisingly small considering 189 (latest number) Dutch people died.

Reading your post I couldn't help but thinking of a Christopher Hitchens quote from is autobiography: What do you think of Douglas Murray's view on Gaza? www.gspellchecker.com/2014/07/ep24-douglas-murray/(begins at the 39 minutes mark) He just says: "I think that Israel should be allowed to win". Apparently the only way the thinks this can be resolved is to let them fight it out and one side should win this war.

Does anyone have good reccomendations for books/sites/resources about the whole Israel/Palestina conflict?
Pro-Israel, Pro-Palestina, and possibly some books that don't take obvious sides? I want to know more about this in depth, and with all the conflicting news, opinions, it's just so complex.

Yes, it was the most entertaining World Cup I've seen so far. I've seen almost every match and there were almost no really boring ones. Well done indeed.

Congratz Germany. Well deserved winner. Although Argentina still had some big chances, which left me wondering what if... What only if the Netherlands would have made it to the final... would they've been able to utilize those chances, the space left. Would Robben have profited from it?
Oh well, third place isn't that bad, but we were so close. Up to Euro 2016!

Well, whoever advances tonight, will need it. My gosh, what a warning.
the only positive thing is that I was actually never impressed by Brazil, and finally there was an effective, well playing team who could just punish them for constantly playing unorganized out of position. One of the analysts here already said it, and he looks like a prophet now. After Brazil won from Colombia, he said: "If Brazil plays like this against Germany, I'm sure of it that they will lose with 6-0 or so).
I can only hope we win tonight from Argentina, and that Van Gaal has a good gameplan. Maybe Germany will be overconfident. Maybe the final will bring up some orange superpowers.... it will be an interesting match for sure.

So now we have Brazil vs Germany in the semi-finals. Brazil looked a lot better than before but... they're missing Thiago Silva and Neymar. Especially Neymar will be missed immensely I think. I think Germany will advance. Today Belgium - Argentina and The Netherlands vs Costa Rica. Hope Belgium and we will advance. Then a Germany vs The Netherlands will be my dream final.

At least the rules aren't that complicated. Offside is probably the most difficult rule in the beginning when you just start watching (it's a running gag dat women won't ever understand that rule). And I do sense a few cultural differences when it comes to diving/flopping/embellishment. Of course there will be always discussions and disagreements, the penalty of Robben was one of them. I have had some discussions with another American friend of mine and I just can't convince him that it was a legitimate penalty. Yes Robben is a dramaqueen, yes he sold it, yes he overacted... but according to the rules it was a penalty. There was contact (twice) and it was a foul, and when it's a foul in the box, you can give a penalty. I can understand it when you come from a culture with a lot of rouc contact sports (hockey, american football, boxing, etc) that the kind of contact there was between Robben and Marquez, you think that it was a dive, but in soccer it's still enough to penalize.

It would be pretty awesome if it finally catches on in the States.

Yeah Belgium was the better side, but you can hold your head up high. Advancing trough that group stage, with thouse teams, that's a big accomplishment on its own. I would have never thought that. Beating Ghana yes, but I would have put no money on drawing/beating with Germany and Portugal. Kudos!

There are no certainties at this World Cup, that's the only certainty.
