On to my comments:
Another great event by the Gunyar brothers. While the venue has a standard capacity of 4.000 people (even 7.500 on certain setups) it was configured to hold ~2.000. It looked about 75-80% full to me so there should have been a good 1.500 people, which is really good for the setup they went with.
While there is still a lot of room for improvement for A1 in terms of production and pacing they now have a EuroSport deal (this event will be televised soon) which should help.
Pros:
- Londt kicking ass.
- Majority of the fights were entertaining.
- Production has improved compared to their last event.
- Some original K-1 themes were used to announce fights. Awesome! Why can they do this and K-1 somehow not?
Cons:
- It could have used a few more knockouts.
- There were a few injury replacements/fights that fell through and while I was aware of most of them I feel they didn't communicate that clearly enough through their social media channels nor at the event itself.
- 25 fights is just too many. With their EuroSport deal kicking in and them reaching a wider audience now they should consider streamlining their product a bit more. Say 4 undercard fights and 10 main card ones. Don't go over 15 fights total.
Some tidbits:
Among big names in the crowd there were Albert Kraus and Rico Verhoeven. EuroSport/Samuel Pagal was there.
At one point a potentially huge fight almost broke out in the crowd and it took Ali Gunyar himself, Albert Kraus and about 10 security guards to diffuse the situation, lol. Dutch crowds are horrible.
In conclusion: while the A1 WCC brand obviously still needs to mature into what it could potentially be, there are improvements in each subsequent event and they are usually very entertaining. This event completely blew last week's Glory event out of the water.
