One of the most anticipated fights of the year – perhaps in recent MMA history – may have to wait.

UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo (25-1 MMA, 7-0 UFC) has suffered a rib injury and is questionable for his grudge match with rival Conor McGregor (17-2 MMA, 5-0 UFC).

The UFC’s Netherlands Twitter and Facebook account first reported news of the injury. UFC officials and representatives from both fighters’ camps didn’t immediately respond to MMAjunkie’s request for comment.

UFC 189 takes place July 11 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass.

Aldo vs. McGregor is slated for the headliner.

The bout actually took the main-event slot over another title fight: welterweight champion Robbie Lawler vs. Rory MacDonald. With Aldo vs. McGregor as the centerpiece of the show, the UFC reportedly spent millions of dollars on a flashy promotional video and five-country media tour (see the highlights below) to drum up interest for the mega-fight.

Aldo and McGregor, respectively ranked No. 1 and No. 6 in the USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA featherweight rankings, publicly bickered even before the fight was officially announced. UFC President Dana White recently said the event was on pace for a million pay-per-view buys, a mark reached only nine times in company history.

The UFC president for Europe and Asia has resigned today. Rumours are that it was either A) failure to land a substantial German TV deal in time for the Berlin event B something related to the Berlin fight weekend C) the news of Aldo's injury being broke by UFC Netherlands without permission. Only rumours remember, but he had only been in the job for a short period of time.

Also, Chad Mendes has been alleged to have arrived in Las Vegas today.

Jose Aldo plans to face Conor McGregor at UFC 189; Chad Mendes on standby

Jose Aldo still plans on competing at UFC 189. And if he can't, the UFC has a backup plan.

Aldo has a bone bruise to his rib and a cartilage injury following a training accident this week, according to a UFC statement. The UFC said it has received confirmation from "several doctors" that Aldo did not suffer a broken rib.

According to the UFC, Aldo has expressed "every intention" of fighting Conor McGregor in the main event of UFC 189 on July 11 in Las Vegas. The bout was up in the air after news broke Tuesday, originally by Globo, that Aldo was injured and potentially out.

Despite Aldo's current wishes, the UFC has a "contingency plan" in place if he cannot go. Chad Mendes will step in to face McGregor for the interim title if Aldo is unable to compete.

"UFC remains committed to delivering the featherweight and the welterweight championship fights at UFC 189 during UFC International Fight Week in Las Vegas," the statement said.

Robbie Lawler will defend his welterweight belt against Rory MacDonald in the co-main event.

McGregor has already chimed in on Twitter.

They should've just said so right from the start instead of doing some twisted form of 'damage control' after UFC Netherlands first broke the news.

So yeah, this event is ruined. I could give two shits about what we're getting as a replacement or any of the other fights on the card for that matter, even the 'good' ones. They just mean nothing in comparison to the appeal of the original main attraction.

So Mendes vs. McGregor is for the interim title now so that they can keep McGregor in the main event.

I have a feeling Mendes will take this, taking away the whole appeal of a potential future fight between Aldo and McGregor.
