At first glance, you think "Hmm. That's interesting." Then you spot the word "Japan", which seems to be their rider, if you will. Then you remember what Heavyweight actually means in today's Japanese extension of K-1.
So this could be fuc*in' anything.

So we have a tournament lineup, props to karaevfan for dropping it in the news section. OP Updated. Going to copy/paste some of my earlier comments to this thread: TBH I was fully expecting 4 Japanese heavyweights here and KOICHI and Uehara being two of them. I don't dislike the card, but I did expect at least one name with starpower. Especially in a field with somewhat smaller heavyweights a free agent like Samedov who's been on a tear since beating Badr and didn't lose a fight since 2013 would have been a great addition and if someone would get past him in a tournament an instant star would be born. At the same time, I can appreciate the building-something-from-nothing approach as well. Just get a few young talents in there with appealing backstories, create a good narrative and if the fights are even just 'decent' you'll have delivered. Look for K-1 to sell us the potential of a revenge match between Uehara and El Bouni. BTW I give K-1 massive props for getting El Bouni back. He has become someone to really keep an eye on.

One fun thing.
The presser for this event was very heated with Uehara basically calling K-Jee and Iwashita weaklings and K-Jee calling out Uehara for having a big attitude despite never having a good win over foreign opponents. One good thing that came out of that though is that Uehara demanded there be KO bonuses. AbemaTV (the host that's doing the streams) is apparently obliging and from the next event (including the September one) onwards $2K for every KO winner on the card.
That's modest enough, but the interestingly apparently Abema is giving away an equivalent KO bonus to the audience as well. For every KO, Abema's going to post up a code and if you retweet it you're entered into lottery where you can win the bonus.

Time for some superfights
Koya Urabe vs. Christian Spectu Hiramoto Ren vs Sasaki Daizo Yamato Tetsuya vs Nakazawa Jun
Wei is probably busy till next year making this an inevitability, but man they're really making Koya earn his title shot vs. Wei Rui. Hiramoto Ren faces Sasaki in a rematch of the Krush tournament finals that saw Sasaki upsetting him to get the Krush title. That's a redemption fight for both fighters. Yamato fights Krush champion Nakazawa Jun in what's presumably a title eliminator unless they do Kaew vs Noiri II.
Given that they've been doing 13-14 fight cards, 2 or 3 additional superfights are likely to follow. Presumably featuring Takeru or Taiga if they win their next bout in the 67.5kg events

Wei got fights this month, November and January yeah. Think GoH is supposed to have busier next year too, interesting to see how K-1 fits in there with him. They've also lost a couple of the other more notable fighters they've had so he probably has all the possible fight opportunities.

Superfight time
Takei Yoshiki vs Victor Saravia (this one might be FoTY) Kido Yasuhiro vs Kimura Philip Minoru (intriguing! This one is at 67.5kg) Komiyama Kosuke vs Stauros Exakoustidis (great fight, sad that Stauros didn't get the immediate title shot) Reserve bout Aitaka Ryo vs Furuta Taichi (um... ok)

Stauros just fucking unequivocally demolished Taiga, non-title BS is so unnecessary.

Why does this video have so many dislikes? Haven't people gained a bit of faith in K-1 Japan by now? Stauros just fucking unequivocally demolished Taiga, non-title BS is so unnecessary. 100% agree with this. Every time a champion fights for his promotion it should be a title fight. It happens everywhere, but it really shouldn't.

Reserve bout Aitaka Ryo vs Furuta Taichi (um... ok) Look at it this way. Imagine them putting a fighter from outside of Japan in there; to many it would feel like a waste. Not sure if there are better suited Japanese HW guys for the reserve fight, you could probably weigh in on that a lot better.

Not the most interesting card, but a few decent fights.
Koya vs Spectu is interesting. Both are guys who usually look good but occasionally get owned. Yamato vs Krush guy will be a good chance for both of them to catch the publics eye with a definitive win. Mini Zambo should bring the fireworks. Hopefully the HWs bring the concussive ultraviolence.

For me this is probably one of the most interesting K-1 Japan cards yet. It's all about the return to the roots of K-1 with the heavyweights. I don't know with how much significance the staff is treating this, but there is a lot of potential. At the same time it's a big risk; just looking at the matchups and names on the card it isn't stacked so you'll have to rely on brand recognition and storylines and hope it delivers.
Unfortunately I can't watch this live due to work, but with thanksgiving / labour day being tomorrow in the US and Japan I imagine some of you might have an opportunity to tune in so I'm going to create a thread where this can be discussed live without muddying this one up.
