dinner tables, dancing girls, and Jeroen Post.
3 Dutch 'traditions' I'd love for kickboxing to ban globally
Having said that this was a solid event.
Some notes:
The Wildcard tournament was actually two separate 4-man tournaments rather than a big 8-man one. Thinking back of previous WFL events I should have known as they like to do multiple 4-man tournaments on a single card.
Aside from some pacing issues, most fights were pretty solid and production looked nice. I would have liked some on screen graphics though and I didn't like how the sound was sometimes muted inbetween fights. That might be something they will fix for the TV broadcast on Spike, though.
Too bad they didn't sell out the relatively small venue, but given how it was held on Sunday I can understand.
Bogdan Stoica looked better than I expected as I thought El Bouni would easily knock him out. It actually was a pretty competitive fight. As for El Bouni I feel he didn't look his usual self. He still won the tournament, but I feel like he looked better in K-1 and he actually lost that tournament.
Sikking/van den Bos was a fun and competitive brawl.
Murthel Groenhart's brother Fernando Groenhart has potential, but needs to work on his gas tank.
The tournament participants for the Final 8 in May are:
- Murat Aygun
- Boy Boy Martin
- Sam Tevette
- Fabio Kwasi
- Levi Rigters
- Tarik Khbabez
- Andres Stoica
- Ibrahim El Bouni
Tournament Reserve Fighter: Clyde Brunswijk
Near the end of the show Melvin Manhoef held an emotional speech about a woman who's a WFL staff member who was sitting in the crowd. She suffered a stroke and it clearly was a difficult moment for Melvin as well.
Apparently this was Ricardo van den Bos' comeback fight after a 4 year lay-off. While he did lose his fight, he didn't look bad. Perhaps there's hope for Ghita.
Levi Kuyken, the Belgian fighter replacing Toktasynov was solid.
Brian Douwes vs. Achraf Houssini was a lot more entertaining than it had any right to be: Douwes fought on three days notice, Achraf on less than one. Crazy chin by Achraf as he was headbutting away Brian's bomb combos .
Full results will follow as soon as I can find a list as I wasn't taking notes during the event.
For now, this'll have to do:
