Getting more than just a little annoyed with some people I know mass sharing heavily edited footage on social media that (supposedly) proves news outlets are selling us lies.
They're doing it with the Ukraine situation now and were doing it with COVID before that.
Sure, many news outlets push sensationalism and are often full of shit, but that's not why these people are crying 'fAkE nEwS!'. It's because they want to convince you the of Illuminati and shadow government, not realizing they're slowly transforming into Alex Jones supporters.
I wouldn't have that much of an issue with it if these were people I didn't care for. In fact, I've already erased a couple of COVID-deniers out of my life, but they were acquaintances at best.

This is a way things escalate in war. It's going to be a huge morale boost for Russian soldiers. They become less and less squeamish as things escalate this way.
But that's *almost* nobody's fault. Ukrainians might have to take this back, but they say such a thing to begin with because they are getting desperate. This is war. War is ugly.
Plus Zelensky is ceding more and more power to the ultra-nationalist neo-nazi factions, because those men are the most willing to fight. They are obviously much better soldiers than the Ukrainians who are torn between getting outraged and thinking of their relatives in Russia, since they have the so-called "moral clarity". That's going to boost the morale of the Russian soldiers too, because the Russian propaganda of "fighting Nazis" becomes indeed truer. The propaganda narrative becomes something that's not 100% bullshit. And like I said, that's why the Russians are attacking Mariupol extra hard and with a lot more intensity.
That's war too. It's always a boon for far-right.

The human desire to feel special is disconcertingly strong. Lazy losers thinking that they know something other people don't is just one form of pathology. Special knowledge must be earned. You have to work hard to get it. You *could* get some by sitting in front of the computer, but you'd have to do that intensely, for a long time, looking up stuff, thinking, thinking, looking up stuff, comparing stuff, thinking, thinking, debating someone who has a different opinion, leaving the computer for a few hours to read a book, thinking, talking to people, looking up stuff, thinking, thinking, 24/7, assuming you have the *basic* background knowledge to begin with. Social media promotes laziness. It's a kind of drug to make you feel special without doing shit. It empowers people in a horribly wrong way.

I feel physically ill seeing stuff like this. Historical events create ghosts. You might not see them, but they are there. And every once in a while someone reminds you of their presence like this.
Yes. I know. The US/NATO rationale for bombing Serbia was absolute bullshit. That was about as bad as the Iraq War in terms of justification. Kosovo became a horrible precedent. "OK, if you can do that, if the world allows you to do that, you can and WILL do that to us too, won't you?" was the Russian position. Putin was right when he posed that question.
But that also shows the limits of the Russian perspective too. Putin followed it up with, "So, if we do the same, what will you do? Be a hypocrite and condemn us?" It's reactive. Always reactive. "If you can do X, surely so can we."
You can scream "Hypocrites!" all you want, but that's just not enough. Not enough.

I think these guys completely overstate their power. It's largely wishful thinking on their part. Rather desperate bluffing, to be frank. Just because "he dispels" it doesn't mean he's right.
But "from the horses' mouth" indeed. This is how they think, and war is always a massive boon for these far-right racist ultra-nationalist ghouls. This war will empower them three-fold.
"If it wasn't for nationalists, the whole thing would've turned into a gay parade!"
That's how they understand Maidan. These guys have nothing but contempt for the EU and others, and even for their fellow Ukrainians that they deem "weak" and "pathetic". "But you have to give us the Javelins, because we are the only ones who can fight, and that's hilarious isn't it!"
Sounds Trumpian to you? LOL, well, because they sort of are, although they precede "Trumpians" *by decades and even more*. It's the American dweebs that are cosplaying these men. You got that backwards.

Wow.
Why didn't you tell me about this guy, gols?
Brendan O'Neill.
He's a beautiful, beautiful case of contrarian nutbuggery. Heads and shoulders above his American counterparts!
I love Britain for producing these crazy people one after another despite being a better society on the whole.

Me: "But why would they even do that, after what they saw Afghanistan?"
A: "Well, I mean, what? What about Afghanistan?"
Me: "We basically stole several billion dollars of their money, and they are literally dying because of that."
A: "Oh! That! Yes, yes!"
This is an actual conversation between a non-idiot American and me.
He genuinely forgot what the US did, like yesterday, to Afghanistan, because of the war in Ukraine.
It's just amazing, how fast people forget things, how hard it seemingly is for people to analyze multiple things at once.
Maybe it's a male thing, though.

A former Marxist turned "atheistic libertarian". A dumb Christopher Hitchens wannabe, basically.
You'd never go wrong with this type, and surprisingly there aren't many of them in the US (people like Thaddeus Russell aren't it, because he's actually smart).

Ukraine is not Syria, the contexts are different, but there isn't really any fundamental difference. The things that I said about the treatment of civilians and asymmetric warfare in Syria/Iraq back in the days are perfectly applicable to Ukraine as well.
Things that can go wrong usually do go wrong.

You'd learn more about the geopolitics around Russia by watching Godfather and Casino than reading Anne Applebaum books, and I'm not joking.

OK, why are people who don't even seem to know Zelensky's approval rate before the whole thing started was barely 25% pontificating about it on the media as if they had any clue about any of it?
It's just senseless. They are just making shit up.

Good God, these guys clearly think that the difference between Russian and Ukrainian is not much bigger than that between New England and Texan English, don't they.
Incredible.

The UK now sanctions Usmanov and Shuvalov. OK.
I'm just too tired to explain why this kind of sanctions won't do much. And I assume that the UK knows that, the City certainly knows that.
Navalny was right; London is just hopelessly, hopelessly addicted to dirty money.
