The card looks promising so far. A few more really good fights and this card could shape up to be a very exciting one. I am a little bit on the fence when it comes to the main event though. Is it okay to give the title shot to Aldo?
Let's take a look at the official UFC Bantamweight rankings:
Aldo comes up a close split decision loss against Moraes. Many thought that Aldo, who was the more aggresive fighter in this bout, should have won. I think that Moraes deserved the victory for being a more accurate striker, but it was a real close one.
Since Moraes got knocked out by Cejudo the fight before, I can understand why he is not getting the shot so quick again. However, the other two guys that would have been deserving of a shot are Sterling and, in my opinion, even more so Petr Yan. Sterling is on a 4 fight winning streak with decent wins against Jimmie Rivera and Pedro Munhoz, while Yan is on a 6 fight winning streak with decent wins against Dodson, Rivera and a brutal beatdown of Faber.
It is pretty obvious that either of these two would be more deserving of the Bantamweight title shot. On the other hand, it is Aldo... It is also obviously the biggest fight in terms of sales that is to make in this division right now. Once again the UFC goes with the biggest money fight and turns a blind eye to their own rankings. On the other hand, Aldo also deserves some nice treatment by the UFC and I would definitely like to see Aldo getting back on track with a new title around his waist.
At least Cejudo seems to be an active champion, so that the 'rightful' contender might not have to wait that long for his shot at gold. Unless, of course, Cejudo, if he wins, really goes for the third title and challenges Volkanovski after this, as he said...
What do you guys think?
