KVFL President: "All 8 champions will be crowned before the end of the year."
The KVFL season kickoff is only a few days away and while all teams are in the final stages of preparation with their fighters we sat down with KVFL CEO K1Power to find out what we can expect from the upcoming season.
Kakutougi: Thanks for taking the time to answer a few questions. For starters, could you tell us what's going to be different compared to the last season?
K1Power: I should thank you for giving our league more exposure by doing this. So for this third season, we are going from three separate leagues that featured only one weightclass, to one huge league that features eight weightclasses. Bringing everything under in one league will make it easier to keep track of the latest developments, especially when many weightclasses and well over 100 fighters are involved.
Kakutougi: That sounds great. Will we be able to see fights in different weight classes in one event, or do you plan to have separate events for each weightclass?
K1Power: We will absolutely mix things up and put fights of multiple weightclasses on the same card. We are taking elements from all the leading organisations in the world and combine it into a product we feel is complete and will satisfy fightfans.
Kakutougi: What does that mean for the the frequency of events and the size of the fightcards?
K1Power: Fightcards will be a bit smaller than what we're used to, we intend to have every card consist of six fights. Before you are going to say that it does not seem logical to slim down cards while adding multiple weightclasses, let me mention that in the previous seasons we had a lot of matchups that did had no direct influence on the rankings. This season however, every fight is a ranking fight so it will be easier to establish rankings and crown champions. Additionally - and you actually mentioned this first - the frequency of events is going up. So you will have less fights per card, but more events over a certain period of time, meaning more fights overall.
Kakutougi: Is it possible to give us any concrete numbers on that? With eight weighclasses it could take a while for champions and rankings to be established, even with a more effective ranking system in place.
K1Power: At this point we have a roadmap for the first ten events or so. Of our first eight events, each one will feature a title fight as a headliner to establish both a beltholder and rankings for each respective weightclass. We're starting with the flyweight title and move up a weightclass each event all the way up to heavyweight. What's more, I can confirm to you that all eight champions will be crowned before the end of the year.
Kakutougi: Wait. Does this mean we get eight events in less than three months?
K1Power: That's right. Eight events over the span of ten weeks or so.
Kakutougi: That's crazy. You sure weren't kidding when you said the overall number of fights would go up.
K1Power: We like to approach things full force in the KVFL [laughs].
Kakutougi: You sure do. However, crowning a champion for the flyweight division in the very first event means there won't be any title elimination fights. Is that the case for all weightclasses?
K1Power: I'm glad you brought that up. There are two reasons we are doing it this way. The first one is that we want to establish champions as quickly as possible and thought moving up a weightclass with each event to decide its respective champion would be an exciting approach to get it done. Additionally, the flyweight division has the smallest roster so to us it makes even more sense to pick two of its most prominent fighters to decide a champion right off the bat. As you can see on the fightcard of the Las Vegas WGP, there will be two title eliminators to decide who will fight for the bantamweight title in the second event. Weightclasses with larger roster will see more qualification fights that lead into title eliminators and so on.
Kakutougi: Sounds solid. We can't wait to see how it plays out. What can you tell us about the teams?
K1Power: So at the core we have veterans of the previous seasons returning to their roles as TeamManagers: Kenshin [MAXIMUM Kakuda], grant [TEAM GRANT F*CKING ELLIS], h [Team Iceman and Nelson Sandwich], urdum [TEAM Legends!] and BOOSE [Teamname Unknown]. These teams have a lot of history between each other which should make for great dynamics this season.
Then there's octanebp83 [TEAM HIGH OCTANE] who entered the KVFL late into the second season, but who has a lot of success in a short amount of time.
Furthermore we have two completely new TeamMangers called Caesar [TeamCaesar] and Koba [TeamKoba] who don't particularly like each other. They aren't human...
Kakutougi: Err... Yes, that's.. that's great. So are you interested in recruiting more TeamManagers?
K1Power: Absolutely! In fact, we encourage it by handing out a bonus of 50.000 KC for everyone who brings in a new TeamManager!
Kakutougi: Awesome stuff! Final question: Which fight can we look forward to this Saturday?
K1Power: All of them of course [laughs]. Seriously, to me personally, each fight seems kind of like a main event in itself. Having said that, the flyweight title fight between John Dodson and Demetrious Johnson is the main event for a reason. Not only because there is a title fight on the line, but also because it should be a truly awesome battle. Also, who doesn't love to see Mark Hunt and The Iceman perform?
So fightfans around the world, tune in this Saturday and be amazed [laughs].
Kakutougi: Thank you so much for your time. I'm sure the fans will appreciate it.
K1Power: Thank YOU!
