Results Kento Haraguchi defeats Serhiy Adamchuk by Unanimous Decision Kaito Ono defeats Stoyan Koprivlenski by Split Decision Petchpanomrung Kiatmookao defeats Kosei Yamada by Unanimous Decision Taiju Shiratori defeats Ilias Bannis by Unanimous Decision Chadd Collins defeats Hiroki Kasahara by Unanimous Decision Tessa De Kom defeats Manazo Kobayashi by Unanimous Decision
Thoughts: + It was cool to see some fun fights on Christmas day. + The Koprivlenski / Ono fight itself was fun. + Despite being unorthodox and at times sloppy, Petch / Yamada was at least somewhat competitive and it had some good moments. Yamada threw a really nice jump kick in the third. + Aside from the groin shots early on and some bad reffing, Shiratori / Bannis was a fun fight. The size difference was very notable though. + Collins / Kasahara was a fun fight.
- While this event had a bunch of things going for it, the terrible Ono decision and at times questionable reffing left a very bad taste in my mouth. - Adamchuk / Haraguchi wasn't fun to watch. Especially Adamchuk looked slow and stiff. - The Koprivlenski / Ono decision. Ono won the first round at best. The rest was all Koprivlenski. - Very questionable reffing in the Bannis / Shiratori fight. Bannis got hit in the groin at least three times and when he got frustrated the ref said fight on instead of giving him some recovery time.
Some additional notes:
It was not a clean sweep like many may have expected, but Rise vs. Glory, or Japan vs. The World ended in a 3-3 tie. That said, the score was tainted by the hometown decision for Ono and Team Rise was also helped by Bannis replacing Zouggary.
Aerts handing out flowers in the main event was great to see.
Aside from some ringside Videoland banners and the on screen graphics, you wouldn't be able to tell Glory's involvement in this event.
Remy appreciated seeing Musashi again when he handed out flowers.
Why was Petch carded, clinching?
Anpo Rukiya handed out flowers to Petch and Yamada.
Özcaglayan was part of the Videoland studio commentary team as a replacement for Manhoef, who is of course fighting at Inoki Bom-Ba-Ye in a few days. Funnily, Manhoef attended the Rise event. Özcaglayan didn't do a bad job with the fight analysis BTW.
Remy said during the fight previews that this was Yamada's last fight. Is that accurate?
Rivals 4 production was so much better than Rivals 1-3, which is of course, the difference between Enfusion and Rise. That said, while this event should have been better in every way than the previous editions of Rivals, the Ono decision destroyed a lot of my goodwill.
Not sure if Shiratori walking out to Mariah Carey transitioning into Rock was the best or worst thing he could have done.
Videoland did a quick interview with Ilias Bannis at Schiphol before he flew to Japan. Said hasn't fully committed to the sport these last few years, but now he wants to conquer the division. He got the call to fight a week ago and his preparation wasn't great, but he wasn't too impressed with Shiratori and wanted to see if he can take him. Well, he couldn't. He was still able to make the fight competitive, though.
I thought the ref was a bit trigger happy with the yellow card for Collins' elbow strike. Especially because he just kept warning Kasahara for the extended hold. To follow up on that, despite the yellow card Collins got 30 points from every jury member. Doesn't a yellow card mean a point deduction in Rise?

Yes, it has been billed as Yamada's retirement fight since October. Funnily enough, his MATCH opponent Anpo is likely heading out of the door at K-1 in February too. He was very unhappy about money on Twitter this past summer. I'm hearing rumours of an MMA run.
I am a little surprised RISE did well here, but I am not surprised at Kaito being given another gift decision. He seemed to struggle with Petje in the summer, and then unquestionably lost his last fight against a Spanish fighter. He has had four hard fights in a row now, and possibly three (I think two personally) gift decisions. Japanese commenters on the Shoot Boxing YouTube channel were roasting them for the brazenness of uploading his last fight, and they were saying on Twitter that foreigners will stop coming if this continues.
Chadd Collins was someone I first saw this summer, and I have been on a binge recently. Such a fun fighter and personality.
Saw a lot of 'this is why I hate watching Petch fights' comments on Twitter lol. I have never watched him but the comments seemed to be all about his clinching, general sloppy-ness.
Saw Juan Archulete from Bellator in the crowd too.

That's interesting. Usually a red card means disqualification.
