I haven't watched nearly enough boxing in 2022 to make a comprehensive list, but here are my picks based on what little I saw:
- Fight(s) Of The Year
Most fights I watched weren't from start to finish, but I thought Chisora vs. Pulev 2 was a fun brawl.
- Upset(s) Of The Year
Dmitry Bivol beating Canelo Álvarez.
- Fighter(s) Of The Year
I'd probably have to go with Oleksandr Usyk. Taking all the baggage of the war in Ukraine and going on to defeat Anthony Joshua for a second time is remarkable.
- Breakout Fighter(s) Of The Year
Probably Dmitry Bivol. That upset over Canelo really put him on the map.
- Knockout(s) Of The Year
It came early in the year, but Christian Mbilli's KO over Nadjib Mohammedi is the best KO I saw: Just brutal.
- Comeback(s) Of The Year
In terms of a fighter coming back within a losing fight, the only example I can think of is Jai Opetaia defeating Mairis Briedis with a broken jaw.
Additionally, several fighters successfully returned to the ring in 2022: Floyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao and Jarrell Miller.
- Controversy(s) Of The Year
I would have to say, once again, the YouTuber fights. They're just getting way too much attention IMO.
Then there was the whole "Will Tyrone Spong finally have a meaningful fight in boxing?" getting answered: Spong would fight Andy Ruiz Jr! Of course, that news lasted about two days until Spong got replaced with Luis Ortiz. I guess it's not so much a controversy, but more of a personal disappointment.
- Story(s) Of The Year
A number of things stood out in 2022: * Ukranian fighters having success in the ring, despite the situation in their home country. * Despite COVID still being a thing, activity increased to the point where I had a hard time keeping track of everything going on. * Mark Hunt going into retirement with a stoppage over Sonny Bill Williams. * Yoshiki Takei extending his record to 6-0. * Something else that absolutely must be addressed is the number of fighters we've lost last year. This is from two main causes: fighters fallen in the Ukraine war and fighters passing from complications suffered during their fights. It really felt like every few weeks we lost someone and was definitely more frequent than the years before. RIP champs and here's hoping to a better 2023.
So what are your boxing picks?
