Very quick translation by me:
Nieky Holzken is at the top in kickboxing. Holzken won the Welterweight tournament on December 21st 2013, but hasn't been active for GLORY since. By many he is regarded as the number 1 at his weight. Mixfight talked to Nieky about his future plans, GLORY and more.
Nieky, where are you at this point of your career?
"Currently I'm not only involved in kickboxing, but also in boxing. I'm still undefeated there, with 6 wins and all of them coming by way of KO. In kickboxing I regard myself as the number 1. I can combine the sports very well since I'm a boxer by nature anyway."
You haven't been in action for GLORY for a year now. You have been talking about contract extension, what about that?
"I was supposed to fight for the title against Marc de Bonte last May, but I had to cancel due to a shoulder injury.
I haven't fought in GLORY since. I was supposed to fight in a tournament in GLORY in America on December 19th, but that fight and whole event has been cancelled."
What's the current situation for GLORY from your perspective?
"I'm not the CEO or anything, but I notice that they're doing little advertisement. Details of events are always announced late which is never a good thing in my opinion. Today I've been told another event has been cancelled or postponed. I don't know the reason, but that is weird, right? Anyway, my next fight is in Eindhoven for the WFCA title against Jeremy Blijd. That's where my focus currently lies."
So your GLORY contract is not exclusive?
"No, essentially I can fight for different promotors which in my opinion only makes sense since GLORY can not give me the number of fights they agreed to contractually. I consider offers from all kinds of promotors with my team. It's very important for me to stay active.
Are there any fighters you would still like to fight?
"I don't really care, I fight who they want me to fight. I would however like to fight Assie (Ouzgni) again. I feel I won our second fight. Also, I'd like to fight Kyshenko."
You used to train with Team Golden Glory. Do you miss that or have things stayed more or less the same?
"My trainers are Sjef Weber, Mikkie Benazous, Maarten van Berlo (fitness) and assisant trainer Johan Jansen.
I train twice a day. 4 times in in Helmond with Sjef (Team Holzken) and 4 days with Mikkie (Siam Gym). Fitness, cardio and strength training I do with Maarten van Berlo. I had a great time at Golden Glory, but had to travel a lot, about 3 hours a day. Now I have sparring partners at my own weight and only travel 30 minutes a day which is perfect."
you also live the family life. How do you like that?
"Family life is very important to me, it keeps me on the right path."
