In Round 3, Palhares was able to snatch a kimura and roll to the ground, forcing Shields into a tap almost immediately. Palhares continued to crank the submission with Shields tapping repeatedly and referee Steve Mazzagatti calling for the hold to be released. Palhares did eventually release the armlock, but not before Shields was so enraged that he threw a punch after the stoppage.

Palhares has a nasty reputation for cranking submissions after securing the tap, so this behavior wasn’t out of the ordinary for the Brazilian. Shields said after the fight that his eyes were poked eight times in the second round, showing off marks around both eyes, and then calling Palhares a “dirty, dirty” fighter for the fouls and extra juice on the submission.

Can't wait for someone to massacre this clown.

Palhares cranked that Kimura for like 1 second longer after the ref put his hands on his back. I think people overreact here because of A) Palhares' bad reputation and B ) because Shields threw that punch afterwards. I haven't seen those eye pokes in the second round though... only watched the finish.
