Manuel Charr Shooting: SWAT Team Chasing Gunman In Essen
A manhunt is taking place after the shooting of Manuel Charr, who lost his world heavyweight title fight to ex-champion Vitali Klitscho in 2012 in a one-sided bloody bout, in Essen, Germany. Police suspected the shooter in an apartment near the crime scene – almost 300 meters from the kebab shop where Charr was shot. Armed officers stormed the apartment but no arrests were made. The gunman is still on the run and according to police, is also a boxer.
Bild newspaper reports that at 1 am German time police recieved an emergency call of a shooting in a kebab restaraunt. Police cars and ambulances rushed to the crime scene where they met a bleeding man in the restaurant identified as heavyweight boxer Manuel Charr.
At first it seemed as if the the former heavyweight contender was not seriously injured but his condition deteriorated on the way to the hospital and immediate surgery was needed. The “Kölner Express” reported of four shots in the abdominal area. The police spoke of “several shots”.
It is rumored that members of a Lebanese criminal gang out of Essen insulted Charr on Facebook. Charr then posted a video on Facebook that he is in Essen and posted the address of a bar where he was at attempting to settle the facebook beef from man to man.
A friend of Charr told Bild: “This was a clear provocation, Charr has many problems with someone from Essen, wanted to send him the message: `Look, I’m in your city, let`s meet up and settle this`. The suspected gunman then ordered Charr to the kebab shop, but that was obviously a trap”.
Charr lost his last bout when he was brutally knocked out by Mairis Breidis in Moscow last month having earned a unanimous points win over Alex Leapai in May.
