So I'm going to get us started here with my own picks:
- Fight(s) Of The Year Cormier VS Johnson Cormier VS Gustafsson
I had to look up some FOTY candidates and I'm probably still forgetting a ton of fights, but yeah those particular two stood out to me.
- Upset(s) Of The Year No particular order: Holm VS Rousey McGregor VS Aldo Rockhold VS Weidman Werdum VS Velasquez Overeem VS Dos Santos
- Fighter(s) Of The Year McGregor, Cormier, Overeem, Holm, Rockhold, Werdum - Some because of activity/streaks, some because of whom they beat.
- Breakout Fighter(s) Of The Year Holly Holm - You could make an argument for McGregor, but he was already very much on the map before the Aldo fight.
- Knockout(s) Of The Year McGregor VS Aldo - I hate that it happened, but that was 'most impressive'.
- Comeback(s) Of The Year Alistair Overeem - Who expected him to make it past JDS in one sided fashion and return into title conversations? Andrei Arlovski - I mean, he kinda botched it against Miocic earlier this month, but he had an impressive run in 2015. Mirko CroCop VS Gabriel Gonzaga - Who really expected anything from CroCop at this point?
- Controversy(s) Of The Year Every other UFC card getting ruined by EVERYBODY getting injured all the time all year long. Looking at the whole UFC 196 situation, that trend might unfortunately continue.
- Event(s) Of The Year RIZIN (Both Parts) - UFC rules the MMA landscape; they have the best fighters and their high profile fights are the highest level you can get in the sport of MMA. Regardless, I had more fun watching a crazy J-MMA NYE show than I had watching any card the UFC put out in 2015. It doesn't help that half their cards got ruined by injury and the most anticipated fights didn't deliver.
- Story(s) Of The Year PRIDE coming back by way of RIZIN.
