I just found out about this guy. He retired early because he had some loses, but out of his 4 loses they were to Arlovski, Cain Velazquez, Jon Jones, and running into a 30 second guillotine by Mousasi. The guy would probably be top 5 right now if he stuck with it.

Something similar happened in kickboxing a few years ago. Upcoming Japanese heavyweight Junichi Sawayashiki had some nice wins early then got to fight Jerome LeBanner and won (!), kept his momentum going and made it to the K-1 Final 8 Tournament. There he lost to Peter Aerts and a few other top guys and decided to retire at 24 or so. Granted he had a few tough losses in a row, but I believe he could have taken a break, rebuild against smaller names and have a great career in the sport.

id forgotten all about Sawayashiki. that dude fell of the planet. didn't even know he'd officially retired.
