I'm not gonna lie, I've barely kept up with MMA in 2017. Rarely have I stayed up late to watch a UFC card live and out of the few times I actually did never really ended up paying off.
However, there are a few awards I feel like I can make some nominations in.
- Fight(s) Of The YearHard to pick one, but I really liked Cormier vs. Jones 2. Despite the controversy and me absolutely hating how it ended, I liked the fight and the fact Cormier was all over Jones.
- Upset(s) Of The YearGSP, T.J. Dillashaw and Rose Namajunas all defeating their respective then-champion opponents within the first three rounds. On the same card. I don't think many could have predicted that.
- Breakout Fighter(s) Of The YearFrancis Ngannou. Pretty much came out of nowhere and within a short amount of time secured himself a HW Title shot in the UFC
- Knockout(s) Of The YearAlistair Overeem vs. Francis Ngannou
Like with Hesdy in kickboxing, I hate that it happened to the Reem, but damn..
- Submission(s) Of The YearDemetrious Johnson vs. Ray Borg
- Controversy(s) Of The Year- This actually started in 2016, but the whole Mark Hunt BS. As someone who used to adore Mark Hunt, man was his continuous bitching a turn-off to me. Don't get me wrong; Hunt did make some good points, but he wasn't at all being sincere. I wouldn't have minded if it was just his way of negotiating a better deal for himself, but when I read Hunt being abusive towards his fans on social media I lost a lot of respect for him.
- The drama surrounding Ray Sefo's promotion WSOF. WSOF had been in trouble for a while, but in 2017 it actually fell under new ownership and was renamed Professional Fighters League. I'm not sure if they're currently still in business.
Dishonorable mentions:
- Every other UFC event having big fights cancelled due to fighters getting injured, not making weight or any other reason.
- Jon Jones again being a junkie.
- Conor McGregor being involved in a barfight.
- Bellator 180/NYC: Sonnen vs. Silva being godawful.
- Event(s) Of The YearI'm always inclined to say Rizin's New Year Event.
There may be lots of blowout fights, but damn do I prefer J-MMA over anything else.
- Comeback(s) Of The YearGSP: Coming back after years of inactivity and choking out then-champ Bisping. That's impressive.
- Story(s) Of The YearPerhaps of no significance to most people, at least not in the grand scheme of things, but I wanted to mention this once more:
Some more appreciation for the Reem, please!
That pretty much sums it up. Not anywhere near the essay I wrote for kickboxing. lol
