I think we are already at a point where the EU's letting the UK just run down the clock like that quite clearly harms the EU citizens' interest. It's absurd.
I still think they will reach some kind of a "deal," though.
What kind, you ask? Well, bullshit kind, of course.
It probably won't even be a deal at all; It will basically be a non-deal deal to extend negotiations. It will be a no-deal, but they won't call it a no-deal, because that would be bad optics, embarrassing particularly for the EU in fact. So, basically, *absolutely nothing* will be resolved anytime soon.
It will be yet another EU fudge, while Johnson continues to be a fucking clown.
That's what I think. Maybe totally off, but seriously, who cares at this point. It's all fucking stupid.

This can't be stressed enough.
It's impossible to just protect elderly people while the infection is rampant in the society at large. That has been obvious since April.
You *must* keep the overall infection down. Young, old, men, women, children, doesn't matter. I told you over and over again in this thread too. "They are just young people" ended up devastating so many countries.
Those clueless SimCity players are partially responsible for this sorry state we are in. Stupid "theories" were spreading like viruses everywhere throughout the summer. That's why I had to scream in this thread around the end of this summer.

One thing that is quite awesome about this pandemic is that the Covid deniers - which includes herd immunity warriors, anti-mask brigade, "just the flu" battalions, and "no high excess mortality" troops because these are basically the same people - are a walking talking encyclopedia of sophist arguments and fallacies. They are truly like a full menu, better than any conspiracy theory that you can imagine.
There are quite a few dumb "scientists" among them, which is truly the icing on the cake.

Everyone mentions lockdown and masks when it comes to what distinguishes Sweden from most other countries, but tends to miss one important thing: *Sweden has no contact-tracing system.
The other Nordic countries do of course. In fact, Norway in particular has one of the best systems in the world.
Sweden could easily come up with a robust contact-tracing system if they tried. It's just that they didn't bother, didn't care.
I mean, it's now clear that I was wrong; That herd immunity was the Swedish strategy all along. They *wanted* (younger) people to get infected, and the question was how to strike the balance between the burden on the hospitals and gradually acquiring herd immunity. Why would you even care about time/energy/resource-consuming shit like contact tracing if that was your strategy, you know?
So, yes, it's about the fundamental attitude. Like I said, what Sweden did would *totally make sense* if you shared the same assumptions. It's just that most of those assumptions have turned out wrong. They tried the easy way, and it led to a dead end.
People make mistakes, shit happens, and we learn from them, but my problem is that those who are responsible for that strategy have been hiding behind the wall that cranks built for them, and refusing to revise their views, taking full advantage of the state of mass delusion in the country. Tegnell and Co. *know* deep down they fucked up. But I suspect that they will continue to claim that they were right for the rest of their lives.
I have zero respect for people like them. Tegnell is still saying shit like "We find no correlation between actions and infection" as we speak. Why don't they stop all the restrictions and go full laissez faire then? I feel sorry for Swedes.
* To be more precise, it's up to each region, with no national plan. And none of the regions - not even Stockholm - have any semblance of a system.

You've probably heard someone argue that the hard-hit countries, like Belgium, the UK and Sweden, had a very mild flu season between 2018 and early 2020, and thus there were a lot of fragile old people who would've been dead already in "normal" flu years anyway. And they "inflate" the death figure of Covid-19 in 2020.
That's called the "dry tinder" theory.
It's collapsed now, although those fools/demagogues keep asserting it. One obvious problem is that you need both ends of the stick to have a coherent theory. So the "theory" relied a great deal on the countries on the *other end*, the ones who had *severe* flu seasons in 2018-2019-2020 such as Greece, Romania, Latvia and Slovenia, all of whom had a nothing-burger first Covid-19 wave.
Need I say more? ALL of these countries have been hit incredibly hard in the second wave, losing tons of lives. The simple linear regression is gone on the chart, and what's left is a bunch of random-looking data. Therefore the "theory" collapsed. Yet they keep saying it anyway, especially to ignorant lay people.

Watched an interview with Badr Hari today who had his bout with Benjamin Adegbuyi postponed due to catching COVID and he said he's never been so sick in his life. Still sounded somewhat short of breath at points.

Watched an interview with Badr Hari today who had his bout with Benjamin Adegbuyi postponed due to catching COVID and he said he's never been so sick in his life. Still sounded somewhat short of breath at points. I know a couple of wrestlers who had it pretty bad too, "by far the worst flu that I have ever experienced, bar none," and those people tend to get sick very often, so when they say "by far the worst," that means something. I'm not trying to fabricate a theory or anything here, but fighters/wrestlers/muscular types seem to tend to get very sick. The Rock suffered a lot too, and so were workout freaks like Chris Cuomo and a Japanese friend of mine (36 years old).

The concern for otherwise "healthy young/young-ish people" getting extraordinarily sick, and recovering from it, is really the long-term organ damage. Now, you shouldn't be *too* worried about that kind of stuff since in all likelihood you damage your organs in all kinds of ways unrelated to viral diseases anyway. You shouldn't be too paranoid about it.
But the examples from SARS and MERS do suggest that long-term problems may be very common with coronaviruses. Not just lungs, but heart and nervous system/brain as well. There are people who tend to have strong immune reactions, and they are the ones who should be extra careful.

British Tories really are a group of fucking weirdos. Many of them don't seem normal to me. Even back in the "saner" (not really) days of Cameron and Co., they didn't seem normal to me. Yes, politicians are weird generally speaking, but these people are genuinely creepy.
The Old Empire was full of fucking weirdos, but it seems as if these people only inherited weirdness and eccentricity, and not the ruthlessness and grit. I mean, I guess that's actually a good thing for the world, but still.

This man played a huge part in that clusterfuck, yet says, "The Iraq War was a failure," so casually in the same tone where you'd say, "Shit happens." These people are absolutely morally bankrupt.

I still suspect that some baseball/basketball fanatics conspired to make Tommy Tuberville run for Senate in Alabama, for the sole purpose of showing all America how fucking dumb football coaches are.
And they have succeeded. Tuberville must be the dumbest Senator in the history of the country. Not the craziest or evilest, far from it, but the dumbest, yes.
