For someone who covers "technology", this fool clearly doesn't understand statistics.
Everyone knows that shit like that is rare. What's truly scary is the *randomness* of it. It *could* happen to your kid, and when it does, they are powerless. That's what brings instability and even illness into the society. How low the probability is, that is basically irrelevant. That's just not how you should understand these things.
People like him don't understand how amazing it is that we accept car accidents, which very often involve deaths, merely as facts of life, despite the fact that car accidents are pretty much the worst way to lose your beloved one. And yes, it's the worst precisely because of the cruel randomness of it. It's hard to figure out how to cope with it.
And I don't think there are many people out there who accept mass shootings as facts of life.

What I mean when I say the US police "can't solve shit, can't stop shit" is that there are some fundamental problems outside the quality of the cops - which is a problem too - that cause it. Like the philosophical dominance of the broken windows theory. Like prejudices. Like poverty.
And like guns. So many guns, everywhere.
I don't know what actually happened in the school building, nor am I able to comment meaningfully on the "performance" of the cops. But I very much doubt that "better" cops would've been able to prevent this tragedy.
Like I said, that's not where the real issue is. You can pretend to be a Delta Force and give me a lecture on how to save children from a mass murderer all you want, but I must tell you that you won't ever convince me that it's easy to stop a psychopath armed to the teeth who has no second thoughts on murdering children.
Sure, it's possible that the cops even ended up killing some of the children. But you know what, shit *can* happen, against a psychopath armed to the teeth who has no second thoughts on murdering children, let alone cops.
No, I'm not defending the cops. I don't know what happened. But they are NOT the root problem.

Despite all the bad news for Ukraine - none of which was actually "news" though - it's not really going well for Russia either. They can take towns here and there, but will have to keep them. And that's going to drain their limited resources.
Yes, tons of Ukrainians will probably die. But so will Russians. The keyboard warriors can't tell me now that they care about anyone's life. All they care about is which team scores, since that's how they have behaved all along.

I won't go any deeper into the Syria stuff, though. It's just depressing, and no one would have the faintest idea what all the acronyms mean. Just way too complicated for a layman, and I'm aware that people stopped caring about Syria a long time ago.
