AbemaTV's parent company's 1st quarter FY2019 results were presented today. Of note is that part of the future plan involves international broadcasting (although the K-1 rights situation may be too much of a minefield for that to ever happen), virtual gifting (lol) and public gambling (uh oh). They're pumping a pretty staggering amount of money into Abema, forecast for 20 billion yen this financial year alone, and their revised forecast is for an overall gross profit across all businesses of 20 billion yen. Seems Abema pulled in 9.5 billion in sales this quarter though, so once they get new revenue streams up it may be less of a financial albatross?

They've also just put out a warning of for future earning forecasts, saying that this year their operating profits are expected to be $~100M lower than the ~$300M it forecasted just a month ago (lol). The CyberAgent president is now pushing for cost cutting, so that's a yikes for Abema. The Abema fight producer has been priming people with the idea of twitch like stream donations for fighters. Personally I feel that's a worthwhile thing to do, though knowing Ashizawa that could lead to guys interrupting the flow of the fight to petition for cash. Gambling is an interesting angle and one a lot of people seem to be pursuing in one form or another. In terms of fight businesses, I'm of the opinion there's some confluence of Japan opening up IRs + crypto prediction markets that could make some dude really rich. I just don't know what yet

Rewarding Kido for doing dumb shit for attention is going to get old really fast.
It sounds like Abema is going to enter put up or shut up territory fairly soon. I hope some tinkering around the edges can get them there, but the numbers are pretty damning. It's an absurd amount of money.

On the subject of PEDs: While I do have more respect for the idea of being a truly clean fighter, I assume that they are actually few and far between at the top level.
Having said that, I really don't care for the current half-assed way of testing. Because in the grand scheme of things it's inconsequential. Sure a 4 year ban is absolutely INSANE, but ultimately it means you 'just' have to fight across the border.
I have a far bigger issue with promotions having double standards. If you're a popular enough fighter you can get away with anything. Look at Jon Jones who is literally a junkie, but never gets more than a slap on the wrist for the UFC to *somewhat* save face. In spite of all the shit he's pulled he's never had to go more than a year without a fight. In fact, just a month ago the UFC literally relocated the event at the last minute to make his fight happen. Because fuck inconveniencing the fans who bought a ticket to attend the show.
Then we have Nick Diaz who hasn't fought since 2015, because he likes to smoke weed. But he isn't as big a draw as Jones and is (rightfully) critical of the UFC so fuck his career, right?
And while I did just use an MMA example, it applies to pretty much everything else as well.
Realistically it's never going to happen, but I wish the same set of rules and standards would apply to everyone.

Full Glory cards on Fight Pass? Tell me its true boss!
No lie. Live Glory main cards were as inaccessible as Bellakick for a sec there. Now it's just as available as other Mainstays like lethwei and Quintet

Slowly but surely kickboxing's accessibility barriers are falling.
Somebody pick up RISE already.

Presumably around the same time also? Brilliant thinking by everyone involved.
