What's alarming in the above charts is that BNT162b2(Pfizer/BioNTech) gives a small-yet-not-negligible percentage of mostly older people hardly any protection at all.

I used to think that now that we've got the vaccines it's absolutely counter-productive to emphasize masking and other measures, but when I went to a hospital for a totally non-Covid reason and saw doctors and nurses there speaking directly into patients' faces and even slightly coughing (!) while being totally maskless, I had to change my mind.
It's not even just about the danger of infections. It's not even just about ignorance on the vaccines. It's about fucking common sense, the lack thereof. There are so many people, even in the medical field, who lack the goddamn basic courtesy as members of a society, even after what we've gone through.
The pandemic isn't over yet. There are still tons of virus circulating in the communities. You fucking wear goddamn masks at goddamn hospitals even if you are vaccinated, even if there are only 50 - hell, only five goddamn people testing positive every day in the city. It's really about fucking attitude.
I don't know what the fuck is wrong with those people. Sadly this is all too common in the US.

I said, "even in the medical field," in the previous rant, but "even" was probably not necessary there.
There are a lot of reasons to thank medical doctors and nurses in this pandemic obviously, but unfortunately they have also tuned out to be by far the worst sources of Covid misinformation. I'm obviously generalizing here and thus offending a lot of people, but I trust you know what I'm talking about.
Strangely people tend to think "MD" means super-smart. As someone who grew up in a MD household, I can assure you that they are on average the most superstitious, irrational, full-of-it "science" people out there. And they LOVE commenting authoritatively on all things related to health that they actually have nada clue about.

It's just shocking that people still don't seem to understand that an Afghan dude who is fluent in English and working at an advertisement agency in Kabul represents a tiny, tiny, minuscule minority in the country. If you think the urban/rural politico-cultural divide in America is huge, it's fucking humongous in Afghanistan. Drive for three hours from Kabul, and you'd understand there's almost nothing in common between a local carpet salesman there and the Kabul ad guy.
But all you hear about Afghanistan from the media is about that urban ad dude.
Or they do understand that, but pretend not to. I'm talking about you, you blowhards in the media and industry. You failed to achieve ANY of your stated goals in the war, achieved literally none as even getting OBL had nothing to do with Afghanistan, but somehow we should've continued it for another millennium, saying, "Shame on us, abandoning those wonderful people in Kabul!"
OK, then state clearly that you will stay there forever and basically run a different tiny city state ala Singapore inside Afghanistan, whatever you will call it, specifically for those urban Kabul people. I actually might be for it if you have an actual goddamn plan and are SERIOUS about it. I have a lot, lot more in common with the urban Afghans than with those rural pumpkins. I do hope they will be okay.
It's been the same anywhere I've been to. Even in Belgium I struggled to have meaningful conversations with some rural Flemish people who seemed to me very parochial and resentful in general. Needless to say, you can never truly understand Japan if all you know is Tokyo.
So, again, I actually might be for it if you have an actual goddamn plan and are SERIOUS about it. But you don't, and aren't. It's all fucking bullshit. A clear majority of Afghans see the Taliban as the lesser of two evils compared to the US and its puppet regime. That's a fact, and NONE of your fucking plans or ideas seem to take an iota of that into consideration.
So, Biden is right despite every error that he made, and you are all fucking bullshit merchants.

If you are still wondering why after all these years I ended up cancelling my official subscription to the New York Times (of course I will continue to read some articles through semi-cheating) just read Peter Baker's piece on Joe Biden. Whatever that crap is, it's not journalism.
I've been defending Joe Biden a lot both here and real life, but I think what I'm defending is fairness, empathy, justice and decency. Biden happens to be at the crossroads of these things at the moment. I don't mind sounding like a Bidenstan.

Here's a good substack article on the whole Covid airborne thing: Why admitting Covid is Airborne is so hard.Evidence for airborne spread of Covid-19 is strong, but authorities underemphasize airborne protections. The curious history of infectious disease reveals how this anti-airborne bias emerged. theair.substack.com/p/why-covid-is-airborne-historyVery interesting. As I explained before, conventional wisdom dies amazingly hard. In fact, the "there ain't no evidence for Covid being airborne" brigade are still very much alive, among the experts. Remember that back in Feb. 2020. Trump said to Bob Woodward, "You just breathe the air and that’s how it’s passed," after he talked to Xi.

For the n-th time, it's just wrong to compare the US to countries like Germany, the Netherlands, France and even the UK.
It's actually Russia, India, and best of all, Brazil. We never like to hear that because OMG PUTIN!? BOLSONARO?! WE ARE AMERICA!!!!, but that's the undeniable truth. The only difference is that the US is significantly richer than the others. Of course it's a big one, but just one.
One key entity behind this total Bolsonaro zealotry is the coalition of evangelical Christians, just like America.
Brazil is usually edgier, and a few steps ahead though.

Oh, man. I didn't know Michael K. Williams passed away. It's always the good ones that leave. Woke up to it this morning. He's one of those actors whose face you'd see pop up a lot in film, tv and even videogames. While I can't say I saw him in any of the roles he's praised for, I did see him in smaller gigs and as a guest in things like The Daily Show and he always came across as a well-spoken, classy guy. Jean-Paul Belmondo passed away as well, who my mom's a fan of. At least he got to live a long life. RIP.

Jean-Paul Belmondo passed away as well, who my mom's a fan of. At least he got to live a long life. His health condition was not good for much of the last few decades, so I think he really lived a long life considering. So, Jean-Luc Godard has outlived Belmondo too. I hope he will live forever.
