BTW I finally got to see Pokémon: Detective Pikachu last night.
While for the most part it's very much aimed at a younger audience, people who grew up playing the games will have a lot of 'ooh' and 'aah' moments as they recognize the various Pokémon that have cameos.
The dynamic between looking like a cute cuddly Pikachu and being voiced by Ryan Reynolds actually works really well and definitely carries the movie for the most part.
There are also some lines thrown in by Reynolds that will definitely fly over children's heads.
While I haven't played the Detective Pikachu game specifically, I've played every generation of the main series and it's all depicted accurately.
I'm comfortable enough to say that slowly, but surely we appear to - finally - be heading in the right direction with video game adaptations. All they need to do is just respect the source material, really.

So I saw Godzilla II - King of Monsters last night. I didn't like the first one, because Godzilla was barely in it and they kept teasing him throughout the film while giving us a needless storyline with human characters that nobody goes to see this type of film for.
Some possibly mild spoilers ahead.
Unfortunately the sequel doubled down on the human characters and combined it with very messy and nonsensical storytelling, making it feel like I was watching a Transformers film at times, which is not the franchise to be compared to. I could have forgiven most of that though, if the film had delivered on this one essential aspect: kick-ass monster battles. It didn't.
Most of the battle scenes were short, badly choreographed (as far as huge monster battles go anyway) and were hidden behind walls of rain and fog to hide the often surprisingly mediocre looking CGI. This was one aspect the first part actually had going for it.
So, does Godzilla II - King of Monsters have any redeeming qualities? It actually does. There are a handful of awesome long & establishing shots which imply that at least at some point, someone knew what they were doing. The final battle was pretty cool too and some of the score sounded pretty epic.
While these few positives aren't enough to save the movie by a long shot, I try to find something to like in every movie and I did.
I'll probably still end up seeing Godzilla vs. Kong since I did like Kong: Skull Island, but I'm not sure what to expect, really.

Just got back from John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum and it blew me away.
Didn't expect to be saying it, but this is actually a film of the year contender for me.

I watched Spider-Man: Far From Home last week and while it was far from a traditional Spidey story (it doesn't even take place in New York, or, America) I liked it much more than I expected to.
Also binged Stranger Things season 3 last Saturday and it was just so amazingly good.

This makes me very giddy!
It's probably not going to make its 200M USD (!!!) production budget back, but I think it looks very promising so far.

I'm not a big Disney fan.
I don't like the amount of power they've amassed over the past decade.
I think in their latest dispute with Sony over Spider-Man, Sony is 100% in the right.
Having said that: I am a massive Marvel fan. I've always liked Pixar. I'm also a Star Wars fan.
Admittedly it's perhaps to a lesser, more casual extent, but I like the franchise and think that generally speaking, the modern Star Wars films aren't given a completely fair shake by fans.
Not saying I don't see some issues with the films, but I think they're worthy sequels and look forward to the new stuff that's coming out.

Just got back from seeing IT: Chapter Two with friends.
While it does have some issues like an overuse of CGI and could have used some tighter editing, I thought that just like the book it was a very good mix of genres and extremely well cast: the grown-up loser's club looks just like its younger counterpart.
A worthy sequel and overall entertaining film.
