Just watched the new Mortal Kombat film and it was a lot of fun.
The characters and story are way over the top, but that's exactly what Mortal Kombat is supposed to be. It's true enough to the source material, while still doing its own thing.
I very much like that all Asian characters were actually played by Asian actors and that they spoke in their native tongue where you would expect them to. Absolutely loved all the direct references to the games as well.
At certain points throughout the film the story structure and direction could have been a bit more tight, but considering this comes from a first time director and there in all likelihood having been studio interference on some level - it's a Warner Bros. film after all - I think it turned out well. And at a supposedly low budget at that.
I'm hoping this does well enough for a sequel which can expand the universe and address some of the issues of the first film.

Just finished the first season of Invincible and I can not recommend it enough.
I've never read the comics, but when the first trailer hit I thought it looked interesting.
Fast forward to the first episode and was immediately hooked.
Just read Amazon ordered two more seasons, so bring it!

Paul Mooney, Trailblazing Comedian and Richard Pryor Collaborator, Dies at 79www.nytimes.com/2021/05/19/arts/paul-mooney-dead.htmlThe bad news just keeps piling up this week... I mainly remember Mooney from his hilarious bits in Chappelle's Show. This classic comes to mind: RIP Mr. Mooney.

I'm not the biggest zombie fan, but I just watched Army of the Dead and liked it.
I also really liked the Dawn of the Dead remake from 2004. Both happen to be Zack Snyder films.

Watched Downsizing last night. Wanted to see it for a while, just never got around to it.
It was pretty good! Parts of it that were probably meant as a surprise ended up being predictable, while other parts caught me by surprise. It was a nice mix of drama and comedy with a pretty well thought-out sci-fi element.

Watched The Suicide Squad last night (the new one) and it's a fun and surprisingly original film.

I've been rewatching old shows I remember from the 90s. Some hold up pretty well, others not as much. Magic School Bus has been pretty hit and miss, but I guess thats pretty awesome considering its edutainment made 30 years ago for small children. Sailor Moon is one I definitely appreciate more now than as a kid. Its hard to believe cartoon channels back then agreed to air a show not afraid to violently kill off characters, but I guess they never saw past the cute girls in mini skirts aesthetic.

I remember watching some episodes of Sailor Moon as a kid in the early 90s. It was on German public access TV, which aired it at seemingly random time slots and out-of-order lol.
Seeing stuff you loved when you were younger is definitely an interesting experience; there's a ton of stuff where you can easily tell it was only made to appeal to children and you probably couldn't get into it if you were introduced to it for the first time as an adult. On the other hand, like you said, sometimes you'll enjoy something just as much - if not more - when you're old enough to fully appreciate all of its aspects.
When something holds up even after stripping away any nostalgia you may hold for it, you found something special.
