Well, when I had time I wanted to go through a list of all the old PRIDE and UFC events to jog my memory but it the end decided against it. Firsty, cos I really haven't got that much free time, and secondly that would kind of defeat the point - if they were cards I was really hyped for I should remember then anyway.
So..., the first two epic events that came to mind, one's that I remember being ridiculously hyped for were...
PRIDE MW GP 2003 Opening Round (Total Elimination 2003)
The card was fucking insane! Chuck coming over from the UFC. Bustamante coming to PRIDE after winning the UFC belt. Fedor, when he was tearing through everyone, vs. Goodridge. Fucking Mirko-Vovchanchyn! And to top it all Saku-Wanderlei 3!!! I remember being so ridiculously pumped for that one fight I could hardly sleep!
A close second was Bushido 9- still get goosebumps remembering Gomi-Kawajiri!
As for the UFC, the first one that sprang to mind was..
UFC 46
I was a huge BJ Penn fan, and after Hughes beat Sakurai, I desperately wanted BJ to win so I was most looking forward to that fight. Couture-Vitor, back just before Vitor really started to go off the rails. Karo had just won his last fight back that sick rolling Kimura & I though he was gonna be the next big thing at WW. And then of course, the man, Lee fucking Murray. I remember flipping out when I found out about Murray, a crazy English bastard that as it turns out was actually crazy.
Next UFC that immediately came to mind was UFC 137 - Diaz-Penn, the debut of Hioki, Cerrone-Siver...
I made a point of ignoring the PRIDE & UFC end of year shows cos they were always something special.

^ I approve of this investigation! It'll take some considered thought though, bear with me.

I think if Jones/Cormier would have happened and delivered a good fight, that event would have gotten pretty close to be like that. Yeah, even without Jones-Cormier the main card for UFC 178 was really good. I dunno though, outside of Mizugaki-Cruz I had no interest in the prelims. Honestly, I'm not sure how much that's a reflection of the quality of UFC cards or my attitude to MMA these days...

Such a shame. Alas, the days of immense, stacked to tits, PRIDE and UFC cards a long gone

Main event was quality! Sad to say, but outside of the Europe and Asia cards I find myself watching fewer and fewer prelim fights. Only watched the main card for this one.

Thoughts on McGregor?
There was massive hype behind him even back in Cage Warriors and pretty much anyone I've spoken to from the UK and of course Ireland are a fan, myself included. It's a bit troubling though, what with Dana & Lorenzo messing their pants over his drawing power and sticking him every other promo, people could get tired of his schtick pretty quickly. I mean, he's been getting as much air time on the UFC 179 embedded vids as Aldo & Mendes put together.

Any T.V in Japan for this ? It's gonna be broadcast live in Japan on Gaora, a satellite sports channel also that shows Krush. www.gaora.co.jp/wrestling/1972000For the vast majority of those without satellite TV, it'll be streamed live on Nico Nico like K1power said. It'll cost ¥1800 if you pay for the stream in advance of the event, and will be available to purchase up until 10 Nov for ¥2000. live.nicovideo.jp/watch/lv195911088Can't wait for this! At the very least I'll watch the stream, but I'm really tempted to go and watch it live. I haven't been to an event in ages...

It's not that difficult to tell the difference between the two kinds of "dives", at least if you've ever played the sport on a semi-competitive level. But I so often see even ex-professional footballers unfairly accuse players of cheating when they only instinctively threw their body to go out of harm's way. I'm as disturbed by that as I'm by all the cheats. Wow, in the UK at least I've never heard a pundit complain about diving in that sense, that's definitely taking it a step too far. I think the big problem is the players' actions once they have had to preemptively dive. It's the rolling about, diving, clutching one's leg, insinuating a contact that never happened that's the problem. Perfect example: Klinsmann's absurd acting in the video above.

its made strides for sure. im into it now. i never did watch seriously until the 2010 world cup. but now i watch it n pay attention to what is going on like i do nfl and mlb, etc. Wooooowwww!!!!!! And I do sense a few cultural differences when it comes to diving/flopping/embellishment. I feel sorry for the American fans who are just getting into football and have to deal with the absurdity that is diving in the modern game. We grew up with football so we've become numbed by it over time, as the diving & over-acting as become more extreme. But to come in with this as your starting point, it must be hard to fathom. Does make me laugh when I see American fans and media complaining about it though, is it common knowledge there that their leader was one of the absolute pioneers of such behaviour?...

America played some great football, heads should be held high. Beautiful goal by Green too, don't know how the fuck Germany let him go, Klinsmann must have really turned up the charm.

I hope someone knees Suarez in the chin, that would take care of the biting issue. Get Mario on the case! Did you see his sick flying knee last night? I know he's trained Muay Thai before but man...

That motherfucker has just bit someone of the field of play for the THIRD fucking time; once at Ajax, once at Liverpool, and now at the fucking World Cup. Unbelievable.
He's such a fantastic player too but he's clearly got problems. To go from such an amazing performance against England to that... I honestly couldn't believe he did it again.

Despite my frustration that Germany didn't win, I got to admit Germany VS Ghana was an awesome game. Great game! And it had to be Klose who got the equaliser & tied Ronaldo's record!

Can you elaborate on that? I remember Afshin Ghotbi, former national team coach and currently Shimizu S-Pulse manager in the J.League, mentioning his "problems with the government", although he didn't really dwell on that and quickly moved on to another topic. Well, I think some problems started to appear when Queiroz did an interview for BBC Persian (a channel which, for obvious reasons, the regime has blacklisted) last year, which had him in trouble with the government. Plus within that interview he made some very frank, critical, comments about how Persepolis - one of the biggest clubs in Iran - had mismanaged some of the countries top players. The chairman of Persepolis at the time was the very well connected and outspoken Mohammad Rouyanian. So even before the World Cup build-up he seemed to have fallen out of favour with some people of note. As the World Cup neared, at a time of immense pressure from international sanctions it seems that Queiroz's Team Melli hand lost some political and financial backing. Sponsors backed out, the Iran FA organised a handful of sub-par friendlies against teams like Trinidad & Tobago, and then there was a farcical incident with the dodgy kit supplied to the team which the FA advised to wash only in cold water as not to shrink, and told the players not to exchange shirts with the opposing team after a match as shirts were in short supply! Plus there was a huge corruption scandal a few months ago, relating to oil smuggling and money laundering, that involved some very high profile businessmen in the football world (including the above mentioned, now former, chairman of Persepolis) which has put a lot of scrutiny on people within the sport. All in all you can't blame him for wanting to pack it in.

I understand what you are saying, but you are too harsh if you are blaming the second Suarez goal on anyone but Gerrard. The defenders did keep Suarez offside after all, and did expect Gerrard to deal with that ball. I can't blame them for that. I don't think their positioning was really off. Of course, it's all very well for me to sit here and complain with hindsight, but I just (painfully and reluctantly) watched the second goal again I still definitely think Jagielka's all wrong there. He gets dragged way out of position by following the run from Cavani but then hesitates and stops midway in the middle of nowhere. He doesn't go after the ball and he doesn't hold position, he just leaves a fuck-off massive hole between himself and goal for Saurez. If he'd stayed back and kept line with Cahill & Baines he could have delt with the error from Gerrard. But anyway... I know you are too heartbroken to say anything now, though... Iran were so close... so close... Oh man, so gutted but so in awe of Messi. Was the weirdest thing, I was sat there feeling like shit but had a big smile on my face, unbelievable goal. I thought Iran played great in the second half, (against Argentina no less!) with a few lovely chances on the break. I really like the look of Alireza Jahanbakhsh who came on late in the second half, that ball he threaded through to Ghoochannejhad was a beauty. If we can play like that against Bosnia- Hercegovina... I feel sorry for Queiroz though. He's done a great job with that team with seemingly no support from the Ministry of Sports.
